Record High Output Achieved in Last Week of Production

Dear all,

Today marked the planned end of full-scale production at Venture13.

Under Production Lead Colin Slade and his team of indefatigable volunteers, we achieved a high water mark in our daily output. We made it to the astounding level of producing an average of 280 units per day, representing a 263% increase in volume of production since April 10th, 2020. Total face shields produced by Norhumberland.io: 7,105 (of which 200 are being kept in strategic reserve in case of future need).

I’ve included a picture of Darren O’Rourke assembling the last Made in Northumberland face shield out of the V13 MakerLab earlier today (“the last spike” as it were). This is a very poignant moment for all of us as we spin down production while looking back proudly on all that was achieved.

As production ends, our expanded distribution program continues and we still have face shields available for all organizations in Northumberland who are in various stages of planning for return to work. We are continuing to receive a high volume of requests for face shields from small businesses and community groups across Northumberland. Please help us share this opportunity while supplies last to protect as many workers and workplaces as possible, without restriction. All organizations are encouraged to submit their orders via the website.

Thank you to our friends in the Community 3DP task force in Durham Region, to the 3D printers across Northumberland and beyond, to the sewers, assemblers and suppliers, to the manufacturers who lent us their machines and labour, to the makers who engineered solutions and solved problems, to the industrial leaders in our community who ensured access to materials and supplies at the outset when nothing could have happened without them. Where would we be if we did not have a strong community of makers, manufacturers and innovators right here in Northumberland? Certainly, we could not have produced our own face shields in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is much yet to be said, but for today we salute the production team for this extraordinary accomplishment.

An Open Letter to Northumberland.io Volunteers

For two solid months, our producer alliance was the sole source of face shields for front-line workers in Northumberland. Looking back, it is hard to believe that our community faced critical shortages of personal protective equipment, and that such an urgent need would be met by a spontaneous effort of passionate volunteers.
